I draw on Sketchfu with a tablet, and I treat it sort of like digital colored pencils. I also tend to publish several progressive variations of drawings, because I find it helps to go away for a while and come back later to get a fresh view. Pictures of some of my studio art can be found here: http://randombanana.com/art
Comments and constructive criticism always welcome.
I can understand that fear random and it is not an unfounded one, not based on the quality of your artwork, but on the amount of competition out there. However, What they want to see in a portfoliio is some portrait work, especially self portraits but also lots of work from life, not just from photos. I think they also would want to see some original stuff, like perhaps an unusual background or technique on a piece or two. I have not helped kids with college portfolios, but I have with performing art high school ones and everyone i have worked with has gotten in. If the portrait here is indicative of your work then you will be fine as the portrait is excellent. Keep the faith in yourself and keep working! Most artists are dissatisfied with their work al of their lives. Georgia O'Keefe said that as she finishes a picture she thought to herself "the next one will be better, the next one will be what I am trying to say". You have a lot of talent and drive and don't let YOU be the one who holds you back. Your talent is enough to get what you want, let your confidence get you there!! *smile and encouraging hug*
Saw your art on your site, some very good stuff, i know the source photo for the Depp, the morrison, the King and ostrich oddly enuff, a friend of mine uses that photo in a chat room as her icon. So i know what a good job ya did. I need to say this tho, dn't say that copying is not REAL art. It is real art. And if done well it is real good art. but what it is not, and this is probably what you mean, creative art. Altho every artist brings theior own interpretation to a piece. I teach, have 20 ppl draw the same thing and i get 20 versions, every time. With out fail So until it is hyper super uber photorealism, there is still some of the creative process involved. great artists dont paint from their heads. you know how complicated everything is visually. No one could perfectly visualize EVERYTHING, in every lighting situation and form every point of view. ALL artists, ALL use some form of what is technically called "swipe". prior to the internet, every artist i knew collected photos of stuff and kept it in what was called a swipe file. So that when you cannot work out what an elbow looks like, you go to the file, find an elbow pic and use it to guide you in your own interpretation. So we ALL copy, even the pros. What Picasso meant was, the creative artist literally steals bits and pieces, like the elbow, form other sources but puts it together in a fresh way. Sorry to be on my soap box but i have major issues with that copying not being an artist statement *grin* Climbs down off of soapbox.
