Burnt of the heart:
Preface (finished)
It was midnight. I could tell by the way that the chalk-white moon sank into the centre of the ebony sky, its radiant beams glinting onto jade coloured trees and the mystical waves of the sapphire lake. I crouched behind certain shrubs and trees, my black fur camouflaging well against the dense coal colour of the sky. So far I couldn't see anything to eat, but I had snacked earlier. This was my first time in the South of Unknown Island. It was probably wisest to stay by the ocean, but I liked exploring. And I had to admit, North of the island was pretty empty. Twinkling stars were scattered far apart in the desolate sky. I sighed and stared at the beautiful, glistening coat of black above me. And then I ran off in the opposite direction.
A couple of minutes later, I was lost in an empty, abandoned desert-like landscape. It was still dark and the jet-black shadows loomed over the beige coloured sand. Small, scrunched shrubs and leaves grew here, but from my guess would only live about a week. A misty fog hung in the damp, smoky air, muffling most sounds and blinding me from seeing important things. Snap! My ears twitched. I spun round. A wolf was standing there. His eyes searched me from top to bottom. He obviously thought I was dangerous. He growled at me. My fur was standing on end. The wolf had faded crimson scars stretching across his face like writhing cobras, and sleek silver coloured fur. His eyes were pure ultramarine. I turned round to run the other way. I cowered down - I was surrounded. The wolf ahead of me sprang at my throat..... and everything...... went............ black.
Chapter 1 (finished)
I opened my eyes gingerly. From the blurry images I could see, it was still night. An anxious looking wolf was leaning over me. He had amazing white fur and bright yellow eyes. The sky was slightly paler than it was last time is saw it. Memories flooded back through my head: hunting, the wolves, and then being knocked out. I suddenly realised that I was in much pain. My face felt like it was torn apart and my paw throbbed. I whimpered miserably. "Hey! You're awake! You've been sleeping for ages now. I'm Ice," he said, a smile flickering across his face. "Are... are the others gone?" I mumbled wearily. He nodded. "Come on, we have to get moving. I don't understand why you're in Ember territory. Everyone knows to stay away. What's your name?" he asked, nudging me with his paw. "Midnight. Midnight Shadow."
We trotted on for hours. Me and Ice didn't say much. The landscape changed, sometimes a muddy, damp marsh, sometimes a confusing puzzle of pathways made by small animals, sometime rivers and streams, but mostly deserts and shrubs. The wind nipped at my face. Gradually the sun was rising and the sky turned from charcoal-black to a musty orange and then a slightly blueish mix of orange, yellow and pink. "So. What were you doing on Ember territory, Midnight? I haven't seen you around before." said Ice, casually walking alongside a flowing, thin stream. "Ember territory? What... what do you mean?" Ice stopped, staring at me. "Don't you know?..." - a long, unnerving silence. "I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry." he finally said, his faint smile vanishing. "I'm sorry. But... I have to take you... to... to the Boss..."
We entered a greener area, which was obviously closer to "Boss". Eventually we arrived. My heart thudded against my ribcage so painfully I thought it was going to burst. "Sorry. But we are here." said Ice. Trees were arranged in a kind of ramshackle shelter. Ice nodded me in. I took a deep breath.
"Search her. She could be dangerous. Ice!" a booming voice came out of the tiger's mouth. Ice scrambled to his feet. "Yes, Boss?" "What's her name? And where did you find her?!" the Boss shouted so loudly that Ice's reply came out in a tiny rasp: "Midnight Shadow. Ember Territory, the..." Ice didn't finish. "EMBER TERRITORY!?" Ice nodded, his eyes flashing with fear. 'WHY DID YOU BRING HER HERE!? SHE COULD BE DANGEROUS!" Ice cowered against the wall. "I don't know anything!" I protested. "All right. We'll keep you. You could be useful."
I ended up being paired up with Ice for a lot of things after that. Boss said I had to be on team Storm. So I agreed. Boss isn't the kind of guy me and Ice choose to mess with. So we walked down to the river to catch fish.
By now the sun was shining a bright, fiery orange in the centre of the peacock-blue sky. Storm territory was a very green area. Lots of emerald coloured trees glinted in the morning sun, rare exotic flowers swaying in the gentle breeze. It was stunning. The river was lukewarm, and flowed gently down rocky cliffs and mountains. Different types of fish swam in the river, and frogs hopped elegantly from leaf to leaf. A tree had collapsed against the bank. According to Ice, it provided an excellent bridge. We lay down flat on our stomach against the muddy edge of the river. Our paws dipped cautiously in and out of the water, pawing against the slimy backs of fish. I was the one who caught the fish. We returned them to the Boss, hoping he'd be pleased.
"Well. Better than I thought." admitted the Boss reluctantly. Ice grinned at me in a slightly thankful way. "You get a bigger share then usual." the Boss handed us a small piece of fish each. "Thanks!" said Ice, still grinning from ear to ear. He ate his quickly and swished his tail impatiently. "Hurry up Midnight! I've got loads to show you."
After I finished my fish, Ice hurried me off to a beautiful area filled with amazing specimens: Dragonflies, butterflies, sparrows, ravens, all sorts of wonderful creatures. I gaped in awe. A slender, grey wolf with hazelnut-brown eyes came down the path. "Hi, Ice!" she called, smiling cheerfully. "So that's Midnight?" she asked, sitting down on the path. I nodded. "I'm Misty. Ice's sister," she added. "Come with me." I followed her merrily down the twisting path as we walked further into the forest.
"This here," said Misty, stopping at what looked like a huge garden, "is the Orchard. We can't eat these, of course, but they do look nice." I looked at the towering rows of trees. I nodded in agreement. We followed what seemed like a maze of paths and then came to shelters similar to ones we saw earlier. "These are the cabin rooms." she said. "And this one's yours."
Chapter 2 (finished)
I curled up on the stony floor of the shelter. It was raining heavily. Minuscule droplets leaked in from the moss covered roof. I sighed miserably as rain pattered down, water oozing through cracks in the uneven, bumpy walls. Ice padded in through the door. He smiled positively. His fur was glossy with wet, and his eyes in the faint sun glittered and sparkled. "Hi! Midnight, you're on cub duty later." he sat beside me, and huge puddles of rain bleeding of his fur and totally drenching me. I stared at him, puzzled and then moved to another corner of the room. "Cub... duty?" Ice nodded anxiously. "We have cubs. Not many. You'll just have to keep an eye on them." I nodded like I understood.
Eventually the rain stopped and I was free to go. I was on "Cub duty" and according to Ice that was in the Orchard. He led me down the damp, watery path. Birds walked by the dewed flowers, and occasionally bees flew down, but the dragonflies and insects like that had obviously disappeared because of the weather. I sighed and stared at what was once a nice landscape. Ice nodded in agreement. "No-one likes it when it rains." We followed some twisty paths like meanders in a river, until we finally reached the Orchard. "This is Lily, my sister." he said, nudging a beautiful white wolf with amazing purple eyes. "That's Charcoal." Ice pointed south where an adorable jet-black wolf slept. "And we have Smoke, Cream, Ruby, Shadow, Luna and Fern. But they're with Misty." I went over to Lily. "Hi." I said, looking into her deep, purple eyes.
I guess you could describe Lily as playful. She was pretty cute. Charcoal slept under an ancient willow tree, not doing much apart from breathing gently. I kept Lily warm when the winter breeze hit her, I played with her when she was bored. But she got sleepy and un-amused after a while. She insisted we went to the river. So I padded down the confusing puzzle-like paths.
"Midnight! When are we lere?" said Lily, slightly lisping. I nodded cheerfully as we came round the bend and the stunning, azure river flowed into sight. It trickled down cracks of smoke-coloured rocks, through forests and cities and finally here. Ferns, ivy and flowers grew on the edge of the bank. I grinned at just the memory of catching fish in with Ice. Lily crawled slowly into he water. She smiled dreamily. Suddenly a gush of water knocked her down. I ran forward - but too late. The current pushed her little face down and she was carried by the waves down into the crashing waters. "LILY!"
I had no option but to jump in. The current was strong and the force of the waves pulled me down, choking. I could only see a bright blue and felt the weeds tangling round my feet. Something white bobbed up and down - Lily. I frantically waved my paws about, not that that helped much. I spluttered as my eyes widened in horror. Ice had shown me earlier - the waterfall. I was on Ember territory. And even worse. Lily and me were about to die.
I couldn't do anything. I would fall along with Lily down the rocky, jagged cliff and if I survived that would probably be crushed by the force of water. But I couldn't let Lily die. She was so young. I don't know how, but I made my way to her. By now my oxygen levels were dropping. Lily was out cold. I grabbed her with my teeth and yanked her onto the side as I fell down, falling quickly on the agonisingly sharp stones.
"Midnight wake up!"
I opened my eyes wearily. An unfamiliar landscape flicked into screen. Severe pain ran through me. I felt freezing and wet. My head throbbed and blood pounded through my ears. I whimpered. More thing blurred into view. Misty and Ice were peering over me anxiously. "Midnight! You were out for ages! We found Lily just by the side of the waterfall. And then she told us you had went down and rescued her. ," said Ice, nudging Lily with his paw. Misty nodded. "Ice, take her. And Charcoal's fine, he's back with his mum. I'll look after Lily here," replied Misty, waiting as Lily scampered after her. Ice looked at me. "Now. Are you strong enough to at least limp?"
Luckily I was. I half leant on Ice until we reached the shelter. Misty met us there. Another load of cubs were there. The brown one was Fern, and the milk-white one was Cream. Smoke had beautiful, sleek silver fur. Luna was black with grey eyes, and so was Shadow. And then lastly, Ruby was the one with a purple eye and a blue one with silky, coal coloured fur. I curled up on the floor while Ice gently licked my wounds. "Ow. Oww!" I snapped, whinging as Ice's sandpaper-ish tongue lapped my face. Misty had gone to get food, but she would arrive soon and we'd settle down for the night. "Ice! Midnight, I'm back." said Misty, bursting through the door and pushing a piece of fish towards me and Ice. "Share it, okay?" she chewed at her own small slice and sat up in a matter of seconds. I gaped at her. "I'm hungry." she explained, eating Ice's meal too. 'Hey!" objected Ice, scowling. "Whatever." replied Misty, grinning cheekily at her brother. Ice rolled his eyes.
"Midnight, are you finished yet? Come on, I wanna start the story."
"Yeah."
"A long time ago, Ember and Storm were normal wolves. We were....... friends. Ember wolves started going mad. Still, no-one knows why. They became possessed - and started killing wolves. And then some wolves started the battle between Storm and Ember."
"Why?"
"No one has ever found out."
"Ice is asleep. Goodnight, Misty."
"G'night Midnight."
Chapter 3 (progressing)
I woke as the fiery sun glinted into my eyes. I squeezed them shut and attempted to get back to sleep. Not that Misty helped. "Midnight! Hi!" she said, bounding over to me. "Why do you have to wake me so early..." I groaned. I arched my back as I padded over to Ice. Misty shook him with her paw until he slowly wobbled onto his paws. I smiled weakly at him. He growled at Misty and then walked out. I followed him.
After a while, we came into unknown territory. "What is that?" I said to Ice. Layers of golden sand lay in front of my scarred paws, warm and soft. I stepped out, embracing the warm radiation of the beach. Misty joined me and bounded out. "This is Quicksand beach." beamed Misty. "Isn't it amazing?"
"It lies 50.2 North and 49.1 East to North-East Ocean. Legend has it that across here is Plain Land. Moreover, there's said to be a meteorite landing there. On the 5th of November!" chimed in Ice. "And -"
Misty pushed Ice playfully. "Trust, Midnight, you do not want to hear one of Ice's science lectures. Bor-ing..." Ice glared at Misty. But suddenly a thrash to the ground.
I wobbled and collapsed. The sky was a fiery orange and a black line sliced into it. Earth rumbled and shifted as if the ground tilted upwards.A harsh, croaking scream as I scrambled to my feet. I spun round. Ice's chalk-white fur was tinted red. His eyes bulged with fright and the struggle for oxygen.
"ICE!" I croaked. "Ice!" A crack split the earth between us. Ash shrouded the air and hung making me choke on my own oxygen. Ice was limping - I could see him faintly, his snow-white fur highlighted with scarlet blood. His wound was infected with the charcoal from the sky and I knew he wouldn't make it. The earth was catching up with him. And me too. But I stood my ground. "Ice! Ice run! RUN!" No... I thought. Ice, run.... please! Too late. He gasped as the ground swallowed him. "ICE!"
I had to run; my only choice. Misty had survived. She had brains unlike me: I'd die soon. Suddenly I saw something sprinting ahead of me, a blue-grey dash of fur. A wolf. "MISTY! IS THAT YOU? MISTY!" I shouted. The wolf stopped. "Hel-lo? Can you help me? I'm looking for Midnight. She lives on Unknown Island. I've been looking for her,"
I replied: "That's me."
The blue-grey wolf said she didn't have a name. From one look you could see she was a starved wolf despite the powerful muscles that clung on her weak bones. She looked strong yet weak. Impossible, I thought. It can't be. Too familiar, to soon... Her eyes were acid yellow and glinted radiantly like the heart of a fire. My scarred paws padded against hot sand. The blurring luminous sky was inked red and blotted with pinks and oranges. A swift gush of murky black water cascaded rapidly into view. Water! Drink! I thought, blinking. But black? I crawled over to investigate.
"It's the meteorite, it's nothing." said the wolf. "Nothing!? This is all we have on Storm territory. All our water and that's it. Blue-moon river connects to Torpedo falls. That'll be black.... infected, diseased, and North-east ocean to. How is that nothing!?"
I shouted. The wolf looked surprised. "Collateral damage." she replied, glaring at me. "How much do you know?"
"What d'you mean?"
"Come with me."
"No! Lemme go I need to warn my friends!" But obviously resistance wasn't going to be enough.
