I use Prismacolor Premiere pencils. They make a "student" line too which is less expensive, but, not as good quality and not available in as many colors. You can find them at Hobby Lobby or Micheal's if you don't have any other art supply store near you. You can also get pretty good prices or order them from open stock at www.DickBlick.com so you can just buy a few to try them first in colors you want if you don't want to get a whole set. Hobby Lobby sells some sets and some of the colors as open stock, but, not all. I also have Derwents Coloursoft, Inktense, and Graphitints, but, I rarely use those. The Inktense and Graphitint are great if you want to use them for watercolor base drawings that you can go back over with a little water and a brush if you like the result of a painting rather than a drawing.

There are more brands out there, but, most are pretty expensive and so far I still prefer wax based, pastel type, or graphite over oil based pencils.

Hope that helps give you a quick idea of what you might want to try and have fun with it!
