Alpha
Chapter one: Discovery

I sat at dawn’s edge, Alpha sitting at my girdle, her blade glinting majestically in the pre-dawn light. A howl erupted from across Hemlock valley, a blood curdling cry of pure pain and anger. The Werewolves had found me. I whipped Alpha out of her scabbard and grabbed hold of her hilt, my hands fitting perfectly. I felt the same rush of adrenalin I always felt when I held her, a lust for battle, bloodshed. The werewolves were still in wolf form, part anger-crazed human, part blood thirsty beast. There were at least six of them, a small pack. Running my finger along the edge of Alpha, I turned to face the Wolves. A drop of blood had situated on my fingertip. I lashed out sideways with my hand: the blood flung to the floor. It landed on the grass beneath me with a small thump, and I smirked.
“Come and get it!”
The Werewolves went into a blood frenzy, each clambering on top of the other to get to me, taking in the scent, homing in. I raised my sword, readying to attack, as the wolves scrambled closer, their breath thick with the scent of decay. The first werewolf reached me, and I thrust Alpha forward, her blade sliding effortlessly into his chest. He started choking up blood, collapsed on the floor, and his body started writhing, his mind already dead. Another lunged forward; I hacked into his head with the blade, blood spraying onto my face, him too, dead. One clawed at my face, the dirt caked nails gouging at my skin. I cried out, and aimed a swipe for his head: he ducked and sank his teeth into my knee. My blood was boiling with anger, and I buried the blade deep into his spine; he fell to the floor, paralysed.
My knee was aching with pain, the venom shooting up my leg with surprising speed. I fell on to my knees, gasping as the sting reached my neck, enveloping me in a dark shadow. A few werewolves were advancing and I stepped backward; they were forcing me against a wall. I gripped my sword tighter, my heart beating faster, my head spinning with frustration. Alpha felt warm in my hands, a source of energy. I felt her power surge through me, fighting the wolf. The pain was still coursing through my veins, unleashing the beast inside me.
The sun was just peeking above the horizon, and as the last three wolves advanced, I could see their bodies shifting shape, reverting back to human form. One snarled, and grabbed me with one hand, his arms still muscular, and punched me in the jaw. I struggled in his grip, and managed to wriggle free, but I fell with a thud back on to the ground. I kicked him sharply in the lower body and he fell to the ground, his face scrunched up with anger, emitting a small, high pitched whine.
The other two werewolves were now fully human, eyes glinting red in the sunrise, and hands outstretched. I spun on the spot, Alpha pointing outwards, as one man lunged for me, slicing his chest open lengthways. His hand reached for my tunic as he fell, blood falling from his blue-tinged lips. I shook him off: the final human was drawing close. I turned to face him, but he had darted behind me, and I felt a jolt from behind as he kicked Alpha from my hand. I spun round again, his fist inches from my face, but I ducked in time and rolled behind him. I reached out to grab him, but he grabbed my arm and pulled me to the ground, and brought his foot to hover above my head.
I looked into his green eyes, and he brushed a stray hair from his face. He looked like an ordinary human, so no one could tell the horrors lurking beneath. He spat on my face and mumbled “Good duel, mortal.” He placed his foot on my face, twisting it to the side. I felt a sudden urge to tear him chunk by chunk apart…
I craned my head upwards and spoke.
“You are foolish to be my enemy…”
He sneered at me and replied
“Why is that?”
I had gained enough of a gap. I craned my neck further, and bit down hard on his leg. He screamed and lifted it from my face. I spotted Alpha laying forlornly a few metres away, so I ran over and grabbed her. It was all over in seconds. He was cursing and I finished him in one fell swoop to the neck.
I fear that this sword, Alpha, is not safe in my possession any longer, since I have been bitten by a werewolf and it is inevitable that I will also become one. When I do, Alpha will no longer be in safe hands, for when I transform I will not have control over my body. I have sealed her along with this diary so that one day an ancestor of mine may find these and once again show the power of Alpha.
The writing trailed off. Kodi followed the line to the bottom of the page and skipped though all the pages in case there was anymore, but it was blank. He closed the book: a waft of stale air rose from it, filling Kodi’s nostrils. He sneezed and sat up, looked around the basement and sighed. It really needed a clean-up. He walked over to an old-looking chest and checked it over: It didn’t seem to have a keyhole, but it was locked. Kodi wrenched the edges but it was reluctant to budge. He fingered the area where the keyhole should have been, and it sprung open. Kodi gasped. For inside, surrounded by velvety cloth and glinting in the sunlight from the basement window, was a sword.
