"Gosh, I hate school. I don't wanna go through another year of this," you say to your best friend, Tammy, as you both enter your high school. It's the beginning of your sophomore year, and you just want to go home, You look around as you and Tammy walk to your lockers. You see people you've known since kindergarten, people that you met freshman year that you'd rather not talk to, and people you've never seen before. You find your locker, number 69, and the most gorgeous emo boy was leaning up against the lockers a couple lockers down, texting. "I bet you're liking school now, ________," Tammy says to you and winks. You blush and open your locker. You really hope that by some chance, that he would have at least one class with you. Your first two classes pass by really slowly because they're so boring. You walk to your third class, geometry, while your hopes of ever seeing that boy again fade. Your drab day suddenly turns around when you walk into class and lock eyes with none other than the boy from earlier. He averts his gaze from you, his icy blue eyes turning towards the teacher, who is introducing herself to the class. You find a seat and sit through an hour of rules and expectations, but you kept your eyes fixed at the back of the boy's head. His hair is choppy and black, and it looks so soft, you wish you could reach out and touch it. Eventually, the class ends, and you're so ready to eat lunch. Luckily, 4th hour is your lunch period. You stand up, grab your backpack, and begin to walk out the door when you feel a hand on your shoulder. You turn around, coming face to face with the hand's owner, That boy from earlier. You freeze, unable to move. The boy doesn't say anything but simply hands you something. It's your school ID, you must have left it in the classroom. "Oh.. uhm, thank you," you say. He doesn't reply, but walks past you and sticks an ear bud in his ear. "Well, okay then," you think to yourself. You head over to the vending machines where you and Tammy had agreed to meet earlier. You gaze over at the groups of students as you make your way to your destination. You see a familiar face, that emo boy again. He's sitting alone at a table. "No wonder," you think. You wait by the vending machines and occasionally steal glances over in the boy's direction. You wait there for a while, and Tammy isn't showing up. You begin to feel like a loner as students get things from the vending machine and send looks of pity in your direction. "Nice of Tammy to tell me she wasn't gonna show up," you mutter under your breath as you make your way to the boy's table. "Hi", you say, "mind if I sit here?" He looks up and frowns. "Sure." You awkwardly sit down across from him and begin to take out your lunch. "So, um, what's your name?" you ask. He raises an eyebrow and pulls out his ear bud. "What?" he asks, impatient. "What's your name?" You dread asking the question again, already feeling way out of your comfort zone. "Tad," he tells you and returns to his music. You look down at your food and giggle a little. "What?!" he spits, ripping the ear bud from his ear again. "Nothing," you smile and push some hair behind your ear. "I was just expecting something more-" "More what?" he asks. "Something more emo? Like Alex?" He smirks. "Typical." You feel your face heat up. Suddenly, you see Tammy walk by with a group of girls. "Oh hi, ________!" she says. "Sorry I didn't meet you earlier, I just got caught up talking to my new friend, Sierra". Tammy gestures to a petite blonde girl. "And I see you've made a new friend too," she giggles. "Could we sit with you guys?" You look at Tammy and Sierra, then back at Tad. You hesitate, then tell her it's alright. Almost immediately after they both sit down, Tad grabs his bag and leaves. You watch him walk away, hoping for an explanation, but he just keeps walking. "Some friends you two are," Sierra remarks. You drag yourself through the rest of the day, and finally, the bell rings. You hightail it out of that class, and right when you exit, you smack right into Tad. He doesn't even look at you and continues to walk on. "What is up with this guy?" you wonder. "Hey, wait!" you shout at him and run to catch up. You try to keep your pace even with his, but he's walking fast. "What happened at lunch?", you ask. He speeds up, ignoring you. "Seriously?" You grab his arm and he stops. "Man, you're annoying," he says. You let go of his arm. "Sorry,"you say. He simply smirks and walks away.

One week of school has passed and you haven't talked to Tad since. You're walking out of you're math class when your teacher stops you. "________, can I talk to you for a second? It won't take long." You nod and walk over to her desk. "_________, I was wondering if you'd be interested in tutoring one of your fellow peers for a few days after school each week. You're a bright student, and I think you have a good understanding of geometry." You stand there for a second. You don't really like the sound of staying after school to tutor some reject. "Well-" you begin to say, but your teacher cuts you off. "Oh, here he is now." You turn your attention to the door, and of course, Tad is standing in the doorway. "I picked up the notes you printed off. Just wanted to let you know," he tells the teacher. He turns to head out the door, when she stops him and says, "Oh, Tad, I have ________ here, and she just agreed to be your tutor." The teacher smiles. Tad looks stunned. You almost scream. "Uhh, I didn't-" you begin. "Remember, after school tutoring takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You two will have to decide whose house to go to because I won't be here after school." You look at Tad. Tad looks up at the ceiling. "I-" you start, but the minute bell rings. "Better hurry up to next period kids," the teacher says ushering you and Tad out the door. You rush to your next class, but all you can think about is your new occupation as Tad's tutor. After school, you try to remember where you ran into Tad the first day of school. You're scanning the campus when you feel a light tap on your shoulder. "Uhm.." he looks at the ground. You can tell tutoring him isn't going to be very enjoyable. "Your place or mine?" you ask. He laughs at your awkward phrasing and runs a hand through his hair. You feel your face heating up again. "My place, if that's alright. I'll take you after school." He swings his backpack over his shoulder and walks away. "Ooh, what was that all about?" Tammy grins. "It's nothing, I'm just tutoring him," you tell her. "Oh yea, like I'll believe that," she says and nudges you. "Seriously, it's nothing." Tammy rolls her eyes and laughs. "I'm having Sierra come over to my house soon. Would you like to come too?" You're not really fond of this Sierra-chick, and you'd rather not hang out with her or Tammy at the moment, so you come up with a quick excuse. "Haha, well, I can't. I have a lot of homework today," you tell her. "On the second week of school?" Tammy asks. "You know it," you say. You finally get rid of her, and you go home and spend your time wondering how the heck you're supposed to tutor Tad.

You spend all Tuesday frantically worrying about your "date" with Tad. For once in your life, you're actually dreading the end of school. When you get out of your last hour, Tad is waiting at the door. "Let's just get this over with quick," he groans. You follow Tad to his beat-up red car. He gets in, and you wait by the passenger door. And wait. Tad is just sitting in the car, and the doors are locked. "Will you just give it up already?!" you yell. He glances up at you from his comfortable seat in the car, then unlocks the door. "Thanks a lot," you say to him sarcastically as you sit in the passenger seat. He starts up the car, and he begins to drive to his house. He's not saying anything, and it doesn't seem like he's going to say anything, so you decide to say something. "So...you already need tutoring? It's the second week of school..." you say. He turns on the radio. "Hey!!" you shout at him. "Chill out," he says, "I was just turning on some background music." He turns the music down a little. It's all quiet between you two, except for the music in the background. "Uhmm...?" you trail off, wondering if he's going to answer your question. "Oh, right," he says. "I need tutoring because I've already taken this class...and failed it. So our teacher thinks it would be helpful if you would tutor me so I'll pass this year. But I could care less if I do or not." He pulls into a driveway. "We're here." "Obviously," you say. He laughs softly to himself and reaches across you to open the car door for you. You look back at him, then look away, blushing and get out of the car. You follow him into his house to his kitchen table. You sit down, and he goes over to the fridge and tosses you a soda. You catch it and fumble nervously with the cap. You can hear him silently laughing at you from the other side of the kitchen. He seats himself and takes a sip of his soda. "Okay, do your thing," he says. You're not really sure of what you're supposed to do as a tutor. You drink a bit of your soda to pass the time. Tad just waits, looking at you. He clears his throat. "Oh, yea, uhmmm...well, what do you have trouble with in geometry?" you ask. He looks around and tells you, "Well, everything." You both laugh. "Okay, well, anything we learned today that you don't get?" Tad stands up. "This is really boring," he says, and walks over to the living room and turns on the TV. He slumps into a recliner. "Wait, what are you doing?" you ask. "We have to-" "Oh, so you'd rather talk about math when you could spend some quality time with me?" he asks. "Well.. I um.. uh..." you stutter, going red again. "I was just kidding," he says laughing. He points to a couch diagonal to the TV. "Sit." You look over at the couch. As tempting as it is, you know that you should get some math done. "I really don't think...." you trail off. You look at Tad, then the couch. "Fine," you mumble, and walk over to the couch. You both get through half of an episode of whatever is on, when Tad gets up and turns the TV off. "You hungry?" he asks. "Uhm, yea a little," you reply, "what do you have?" "Actually, I was thinking we could go out somewhere," he says. "Y-yeah, sure," you smile. He grins and grabs his keys, "Don't get too excited, we just don't have anything good to eat around here. It's not a date." You nod and follow him out the door. He runs to the car. You laugh and get in. The two of you drive to a nearby McDonald's. He orders a BigMac and fries, and you get the berry parfait. When you both get your food, Tad parks in the parking lot and stops the car. "We should just eat in here," he says. He turns on the radio, and one of your favorite bands are playing. You pull your attention from your yogurt. "Hey, turn that up!!" you tell him. He looks you in the eye. "You like this band?" You gape at him. You exclaim, "Of course I do! They're amazing!!!" He smiles. "Well, that's cool because I have a couple of tickets for their show coming up in a few weeks...If you'd like to go." "I-I'd love to..!" you say happily. "Cool, it's settled. Want some fries?" he asks. He doesn't wait for you to answer, he just leans over and pops a fry in your mouth. He laughs, "Aw, how cute." You blush and nervously wipe your mouth with a napkin. The two of you talk and finish your food before you head back to his house. You seat yourself back at his kitchen table and pull out some math notes. "Alright, I guess we should.. probably get back to work on this now," you say, even though honestly, it's probably the last thing you'd like to be doing. You point to a triangle on your math notes and you try to explain to him that in order to find the area of a triangle you would need to multiply the base times the height and divide the product by two. Tad didn't even try to pay attention to what you were saying. First he was examining his jeans, then he was drumming on the counter, and then he rested his hair in his hands and blew his hair out of his face. You put a pencil in front of him. You say, "Okay, now you try." He turns his head in his hand to face you. "How about you do that for me?" You roll your eyes and laugh. "Uhmm, no thank you. Maybe we should find the circumference of a circle?" you suggest. Tad grins and says, "Maybe we should just take a break?" You glare at him. You argue, "But we haven't done anything! I'm going to get in trouble if I don't tutor you!! If you don't get better grades, then you may be assigned to a different tutor!!!" He grinned even wider. "Would you be disappointed if I got assigned to someone else?" You freeze. You're not really sure how to answer that. That question caught you off-guard. "Well, I-" You're cut off by Tad leaning closer to you. He reaches a hand to your cheek and brings his face closer to yours as his lips softly press against your own. You stay still, frozen by shock. His hand traces the outline of your jaw as he deepens the kiss. You pull away and he lifts your chin up towards him with his forefinger. You smile at him, "You're going to fail this class." "I don't care," he says.
