What it means to me "to be an artist":
What is the essence of Mozart, Goya, van Gogh or Debussy? They are surely talented, they have surely a good educational background in their disciplines. But I think, it's not all about them - many other people do posess this skills, too. So, are they just lucky, then? ^^ I guess not. I think it's because they have brought some new ideas, experimented and found their own style, didn't do what others did before them, went their own ways. I think an artist should be capable of drawing with a pencil, drawing still lifes, drawing classical. But only this doesn't do an artist out of someone - only if s/he can draw what generations before her/him have drawn.
The main stream of people is enthusiastic about classical drawing. Why? Because most of them can't do even that. No ploblem - everything can be learnt.
But what can't be learnt, it's an idea, a spark. It only can be discovered! So, discover your sparks, people! (I try to do, too ^^)

I understand...and art should be about total freedom...you're only limited by the tools, the time and inspiration. If it works to your advantage to use it as a diversion from something else, then so be it...it fulfills your purpose. And to me, that's a good thing. After all, we aren't like getting paid to do this anyway. I just think its a wonderful outlet for hobbyists and doodlers and people who just want to have a little fun without feeling pressured with deadlines or production schedules or clients who are finicky, etc. Above all, I believe Andrew and Matt primarily want people to have FUN!
