Use the opacity tool. On the side of an object that is away from your source of light, put some darker shades of the colors you are using or a little bit of black at one of the lightest settings and see what you get. You can also watch how the artists you like here do it, or, check out http://sketchfu.com/profile/FUtorials for more "how to" drawings in the gallery.

Sorry, I'm self-taught, not an art teacher so I'm not the best at explaining it.
