About Alfinch

So I've started doing this thing where before I draw something I sketch five or six thumbnail ideas and from there I pick out the best one and draw it up neatly. I recommend it, a drawing with even briefly considered composition is both easier to complete and easier to look at.

Seems kind of obvious now I've said it... =/

"I've only seen one duplicate of your work, but I think I understand a little better now I've had a look. People imitating you is one thing... copying exactly... well that could be irritating. I'm not sure I agree that your style alone shouldn't be imitated though, I mean the way you draw is very clean and accessible, you know? If the content is otherwise original, what does it matter if someone uses the way you render as a starting point? That aside, there are those who don’t have this in mind, I know.

So what’s my point? The line between the people copying you and the people being inspired by you relies more on the intention of the person doing it than the end result.
I cope by assuming good intentions, although I know I’m lying to myself on occasion. Ideally, people should make these intentions clear by asking first and crediting you for what they've taken. If they did, you'd be able to tell the artists from the thieves and not have to pin the blame on everyone... Sadly, some things just aren't going to change. If snapping like this is just the way you deal with it, then that’s just what you’ll have to do. I’d prefer to see you vent more through your artwork, though; At least that way something’s gained instead of lost. Glad you’re not going, and hope, somehow, things become less frustrating for you here."

"Imitation is the highest form of flattery, Kitsuki. People copy you because they like your work; they don't do it because they want to wrong you, they do it because they want to be more like you. I can sympathise that you want to protect characters, as the more you draw them the more they become an extension of yourself - seeing them recreated badly almost feels like a personal attack, but I can't stress enough that it isn't personal at all.

Freedom to use and develop ideas from other artists is part of what being an artist is about. Surely you can't say you don't take influence for ANYONE else's drawings? You've never borrowed elements of a character? A pose? A visual style? There's no shame in it, how else could an artist learn? I really hope you pull through this, because I worry unless you accept that your artwork is going to be copied, shared and analysed, you might end up hiding it from the world where it benefits nobody, not even yourself.

I'll miss your work if you go."
