Be very bold with colors, shadows and highlighs! >:D Be adventurous! Darkening in the hair first sometimes helps work out the face colors better and then you can come around for touchups later. :) Looks great so far! He'd look even better with more definition in the eye area!
have to agree with alfinch. the basic shapes are there. they just have to be a lot stronger in color. just dare to use color. you can still reduce them with transparent white afterwards. just think of the "Fire" picture wich you can always see in the "home page" when you're not signed in. the ground colors are extremely unshaped and also dark but level for level it gets better until it looks so amazingly real. try it out. i mean you can always begin again.
I don't think you need much help! You've got the basic shapes and expression pretty much nailed; Now it's just a case of working in detail with at first subtle colours, then stronger colours and gradually smaller brushes. Really you're 90% there.
