Oh, the feel of cold stones in her warm hand. The weight of the flawless 10-carat diamond on her finger reminded her of the plaintive look on his face when he’d given it to her.
She reached for the diamond-encrusted bracelet and thought of the royal princess who’d once owned this piece.
“Yessss" she hissed. “this is power.”
Things were falling into place. Just enough pressure had been applied to Tripp to assure him she was serious. He’d believed the threat. Too bad her daughter took the brunt of his stress, but she’d raised Paige to be tough and keep her eye on the big picture.
The goal was to squeeze Tripp hard and fast, cut the deal, then leave the country.
Image was everything to Tripp. Now that he lost his temper she knew she had him. The next time he saw Paige he’d feel guilty as well as trapped. She was sure he hadn’t made the connection between her and Paige.
It was imperative that he never did. That would ruin everything.
It was like dominoes. Once they were set up in perfect order, all she had to do was knock over the first one and rest would fall, one after the other after the other.
This is driving me nuts. This reminds me so much of a book I read about six years ago about a woman who moves to one of the canyons near LA and begins becoming successful and collects gems as security... and then there's a nuclear war, and the people in the canyons survive because of the geography, and after the war she embeds the gemstones in her skin and eventually makes her way to the beach and finds other people, and becomes a storyteller. Convoluted sounding, I know, but now it's driving me crazy because I can't think of the title or author. I thought it was Joan Didion, but I think that's just because I was also reading Joan Didion about that time. Nice pic!

The trick was setting them up.
