Basically, there's a school where at the end of year 11, so at the end of your Secondary school, the head teacher draws twelve names from a hat that go into pairs. The pairs have to battle other pairs to the death in an arena(like a roman gladiator arena. :3).
Akami is put together with Stefane, a guy she knows, and they have to battle together. During their training before the first battle, Akami starts coughing blood, and is taken to a doctor. The doctor informs her that she has an eye decease, which will make her blind. Sooo, :< basically, during training Akami goes blind.
In the first battle her and Stefane show excellent battle skills, and survive the first round. They continue through the rounds until in one round, Stefane gets shot through the heart with a bow and arrow. He falls to the floor, and Akame gets really mad.
She takes off a bandage that covers her eyes(she's had this ever since she went blind) and her eyes(which are normally blue) turn red, dark red. Her knuckles form blades, and in her new form, she kills the pair that "killed" Stefane.
