Claire and Gregg go all out because this is their only daughter and she seemed so thrilled to be getting married. More than once she mentioned that she wants to have a marriage like her parents... one that will last the test of time.
Martha Anne is marrying a young man with all the right credentials. He's smart, charming, can talk to anyone, larger than life. He's a bit mysterious about his side of the family, skirting the questions about how they came into so much money.
When the twins ask him "Was it real estate?"
He says, "Yes."
Next time they ask him the same question – “Was import/exports?”
He says, "Yes."
A third time, "Investments?"
Again, "Yes."
Other than that minor irritation, he seems like a great guy. He goes by a couple of first names, depending on the situation. With family he's called Tommy. His fraternity brothers call him Tripp.
Again, a minor thing, but just.... odd.
The day of the wedding passes in a blur. They plan to be married in the moonlight out doors with a barrage of fireworks going off the minute they're pronounced husband and wife. It's a spectacular site. The water shimmers with the colors of the fireworks.
The wedding party let's down their hair and they dance outside on the wide sweeping veranda. Champagne is flowing and the mood is upbeat.
The twins looked great in their tuxes and dad Gregg looks handsome in his. Claire is wearing a lovely silk dress that accentuates her still curvy figure.
Occasionally, Gregg will lean over and whispers "I love you." Then he takes Claire's hand and waltz her out to the dance floor.
Both of them automatically cross their fingers as the looked at the new married couple wishing that Martha Anne and Tripp find the same sweet spot of happiness that they found for themselves.
The courtship was fast, intense and exhilarating. Tripp didn't accept the word "No." He just didn't. He made Martha Anne feel like she was the prize of prizes. He pursued her with old-fashioned persistence. Flowers after the first date. Jewelry at their six-month anniversary. Cards, late night phone calls, gifts for no reason. He applied a steady stream of attention.
He met Gregg and Claire and asked both of them for permission to marry their daughter. A thoughtful touch.
Martha Anne accepted immediately when he popped the question. He didn't want a long engagement. No, they'd speed things up and get on with their life as a couple.
This put a huge strain on Claire and Martha as they tried to get all the plans in order quickly. Fortunately, it all worked out. The club was available, family could come, caterers and florists were accommodating and most of all, Martha Anne found the most beautiful dress and veil the first time she went shopping.
She glowed in her wedding dress. This truly was the one day she felt like a princess. She hated to admit it, but she was enjoying all the attention.
Whenever she caught her Dad's eye, she'd wink and he'd wink back. As the evening wore on, she noticed a tear or two tucked in among the winks.
Dads and daughters. The bond was invincible.
