Finally, they're alone. Martha Anne is spending the weekend with Claire's sister. Gregg doesn't have any business meetings, golf dates, or pressing projects to work on over the weekend.
Claire has cleared her schedule and stopped answering the phone. For one night, they're alone ...together.
Out at a lovely Italian restaurant for dinner, halfway through the meal and lovely bottle of wine, the make the usual conversation. Him "The market has dropped and I'm worried about our investments." Her "We are so busy next week. Can you believe the have a parent teacher conference for pre-schoolers? We have to be at Martha's school at 6:30 next Wednesday evening."
There was a pause of uncomfortable silence and then Claire looked up and said "I miss you."
"Well, I miss you too, honey." Gregg automatically responds.
"No, I mean I really miss you. I miss the times we would empty out the glass jar to see if we had enough change to buy a hamburger. I miss the times you'd have to push the car to get to start. I miss the time I wore my sisters high heels just to impress you. I miss the times we'd cuddle in the dark and wonder how our life was going to turn out. I miss the not knowing what tomorrow would bring. I miss the safety I felt when you'd hold me close and say "Tomorrow belongs to us. All we have to do is show up."
Gregg put his wine glass down. Like a slide show, all the times Claire described passed through his mind. Those were the times when he felt the most alive, the most powerful. Wasn't that ironic! Now, when he had perceived power in the outside world, he felt like he had to guard it every day. He'd stopped expecting things to turn out well. Now he felt like if he didn't control things, nothing would turn out the way he wanted it to.
When had the tables flipped?
Gregg raised his hand for the waiter and asked for the check. "Let's get out of this place and go home and really relax."
Claire's eyes soften as she purrs "I want to take a long, hot bubble bath. Do you care to join me??
Centaur, you're a hoot! Well, I don't see any spit flying or daggers coming out of the eyes ... that's a good sign. The kids are both in college now ... thankfully they both got scholarships (Martha Anne is majoring in meterology and has her sights set on a job at The Weather Channel [she has a crush on Jim Cantore!]; Matthew Andrew plans on becoming a graphic artist ... his parents are a little worried about him); Greg has a hot new administrative assistant, and because of that, Claire recently had some Botox and lipo. But, they haven't reached the stage where they can't stand to be in the same room together ... so here's hoping!

Fade to black.........
They've been together for some time.. What do you think they're saying?
Could it be... Him "The market has dropped, I'm concerned about our 401Ks"
or her "Don't forget we have the parent teacher meeting this Wednesday evening."
or Him " Let's get out of this place and go home and relax"
or her "I want to take a nice bubble bath tonight, care to join me?"
or him...
you fill in the blanks...
