What'd I doooo?
The sound of silence was almost unbearable.

Streets lined with dull grey pavements were illuminated by the yellow light streaming downout of the bulbs in the lamp posts. Shop windows, or at least, the last of the shops still opened, proudly shone out their neon signs. DINE AND WINE. That was the one that caught my eye at first. The sign wasn't all that important, the words carried no significance in my mind. To me it was another distraction. Or as I say, a blinder. From my real objection. My goal.

The thing that caught my eye was the dark yet distinct outlines of the people inside. This was just beside Time Square. There should have been no people about here whatsoever, not in the dark and not at this time of night. Every night I made my journey past this little restaurant, it remained open. This struck me as extremely odd.

There was not a person who could have walked in there alone without feeling at least a little unnerved.

I contemplated simply acting as if I was staring at the pretty blue and red sign, small yet noticeable. I wasn't here to see anyone. I was here on an investigation. Checking out this place alone at night could be a big mistake.

I looked down at the crumpled strip of paper in my hand and read the black letters over and over, spelling out two words across the page that stayed imprinted on my brain.

Natalie Sims.

I rounded the corner, the only sound apart from the occasional car being the tap tap of my boots against the tarmac.

I brushed a strand of hair out of my face that was annoying me. I guess I was just jumpy. I usually wasn't, but there was something up with that name. It gave m a burst of excitement, one that I obiously kept hidden, but a burst all the same.

Displaying one's emotions on this job was an entire no-no.

This was my last block. I stopped dead in my tracks. This shopping precinct stood tall and proud. This one. This is where I would see her. For the first time.

Many people huried past me, noticing me standing there but not really seeing me. I looked from person to person, and suddenly I spotted her - a woman, not much younger than myself. she had the same clothes as me, but a different coat around her. She made eye contact with me, but she saw me. I saw the corners of her lips quirk ever so slightly. In reply, I let my head nod. I turned and walked away striding, away from the hustle, and she caught up to me.

"Natalie."
"My name."

I felt a piece of paper brush against my hand. Reacting instantly, I snatched it out of her hand. Not in a nasty way, but in a quick smart way.

"I need help." I turned my head for the first time. I stopped. She turned straight facing me and I did the same.

For the first time, I looked at this slender woman. She seemed to be well built, with a good complexion. Her brown hair was glossy and tumbled past her shoulders in the most natural way. For someone so professional she seemed quite natural.

It was her eyes that really drew me in. Big and blue, but not an innocent type. A beautiful, capturing blue. In contrast to my own this was quite a difference.

"All your information is in there," she said. And she strode away, down the empty street, the yellow light of the lamp posts shining down on her and setting her aside from the rest of the world.

I turned the letter over in my hands, waiting to open it in the safety of HQ. And as I stared at the slip of paper still crumpled in my hand, I smiled.
Natalie was not finished with me.
