I'm quiet surprised that some people don't get the reference. Maybe it's because I'm european.
This drawing do what we call a memory duty.
Arbeit macht frei is a written expression made of steel over the gate entrance of Auschwitz. It means "work makes freedom", which was cynic at this time and place. The scene drawn here isn't the view from this gate, but it tales the dark travel and destiny of the people sent there.
I must be really dumb, cuz I don't know what this is. I have a notion now that I have read the comments, but I can't believe everyone knows exactly what it is and I don't have a clue (or didn't before I read what was already here).
Ominous, eerie, terrifying. Especially that one window. I can't - and would rather not - imagine the horror that infested the hearts and souls of everyone who was brought here. You conveyed it perfectly.
This is a great draw for a not so great place.
Such a powerful draw. What a dark period in history.
Very stark, extremely well drawn. You captured this hell hole of a place perfectly. I wish I could give you three "impressive" cheers because somehow I couldn't click on the "cute" or "funny" cheer.
I remember it now.
Inscribed on the iron gates at the entrance.

Work make you free.

so does death. All those freed people, how wonderful of the Nazis to liberate all of them. I find this image abhorrent.
I don't know what the German says, but I sure know what the building is, Somehow I think those words are on a wrought iron door in the front but maybe not. anyhow, it makes my skin crawl if is one of the camps that i think it is.
A very stark and powerful image, but my German's a bit rusty, I'm not exactly sure of the title.
