Try this, it's confusing when you're new. New canvas, pick the "big" brush circle, choose a color and then don't do anything, but tap the < key a few times and you should see the color fade. Then when you want more color, tap the > key to bring the color up again. For the E key, hold your curser arrow over the color and tap the key...the brush color should change to that color. Hope this helps.
