they convey emotions VERY well
plus add action
work on legs and stuff

your poses look plain to you 'cause you don't draw arms or hands, play more with them! don't draw them always in the same way... have fun ;)

hands balled up by the face, making a "cuuutee~" expression. Poking cheeks with pointed fingers, (kinda pouting) , eyes half open with one hand to mouth, (hand partly balled up, with knuckle of first finger on lips. )
pointing to self with bent finger, with "me?" confused expression.
